Jos at NoDirectOn (that’s ‘no direct on’, not ‘no direction’) thought that I should do this. It’s a real short one in which you describe yourself using a template of 7 words that start with the letter ‘P’. All you do is fill it out, link back to whoever tagged you and then tag others. I don’t do these things all that often, but it’s nice to be thought of so I’ll give it a go.

Passion – God, family, friends, fun
Purpose – Much more than the average joe
Pursuit – A life that is in line with what I believe
Position – Sitting. Always sitting.
Pummeling – Rude drivers. Pummeling is a funny word to use here.
Progress – Doing alright, doing alright. Not doing so well on not repeating myself, though
Personality – Honest, realistic, slightly sarcastic

Usually you’re supposed to tag people, but I think that I’m just going to leave this open-ended. If you want to do it, go for it and let me know! I can add you later and we can pretend like I tagged you in the first place.

    Derek, you have done more than “alright”. It’s nice to get to know a bit more about you. And if you don’t erase it, this post will always be there… for your readers to be able to identify a little bit with you. Even if that would be the wong way, I am sure they will feel just a tad more ‘at home’ on your blog. I think yoúr P’s are great! Thanks for picking up on it -Jos:)

    BTW, this is not the reason I came here, actually. You have some posts on favicons I found in search for some info and wanted to know more about. Thanks!

  • Derek says:

    Well I’m glad that you saw this post!

    Did you get all the information that you needed about favicons or were you looking for more? I’m glad to be of assistance. I’d hope that people would be able to find the things that I post that I discovered after researching and doing things on my own.

  • Ms. Q says:

    Glad you finished your Ps! Jos tagged me as well and I have been Pondering on what to Put. Because Ms. Q must mind her Ps.(arrgggh) actually, when I began to write the post I thought..hmmm. I really must give this some Serious Thought…

    Hi Derek, actually, I would like to hear if you know how this could be done with google blogger blogs, on *.blogspot.com. I followed your instuctions of putting th code in the html of the template, but it didn’t show my favicon (and it also didn’t show any error messages, which is rare when I have touched the template, lol!). Would you happen to know more about that?
    Thanks, – Jos

    Oh, as for the tagging: I have the same considerations as you (and ms.Q). I am getting tagged every day and it is sometimes a real dilemma, depending on who tags you and what is the relevance of the meme to your blog.
    I too don’t bother much about my link count or link backs or PR or Technorati authority or whatever. So I decided two things: if I participate in a meme, it will only be if the person tagging me is important to me as a person AND the meme has at least SOME meaning to my blog. I also have mixed feelings about these link love lists – they can be horrible but they can also get you in touch with nice other blogs, and I have encountered e.g. the Wong Way and Qmusings as a result of such a link love list, so it’s difficult to draw a line.
    I have just now created my own version of “BlogLOve”, you may want to come and see: http://nodirecton.blogspot.com/2007/08/bloglove-comedy-plus.html

    @Ms. Q
    Yeah I had opened it up soon after I got tagged, but I never really finished it. Even though it seemed short, I realized that I didn’t want to hurry it. And lo and behold when it came down to actually writing it, I just did it really quickly so that I wouldn’t leave it hanging (and probably forget about it completely). I like your jokes because they’re fairly subtle. I like the ones that rather require one to be a completely native English speaker. :P Also, I’m not sure if it was intentional or some typos, but why did you capitalize the words that you did in your comment? (That would be Pondering, Put, Serious Thought.)

    @Jos
    I did a quick search online for some information, and I’m not sure which part you don’t understand.

    Perhaps it might be the example code that I had on my previous post about favicons. I could see that you could just put <link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”http://yoururl.com/favicon.ico”></link> and expect it to find it. The truth is, the value for the href is supposed to be the value that you put the icon. And the nice thing is that it can be any type of url you want!

    I saw mention that it might be that blogspot doesn’t allow you to up load .ico files into the web root directory. Since it’s essentially shared hosting, that would make sense. You have a couple of choices, and you can decide on which since it is difficult to say which is better since I have never actually used blogspot. You can somehow get it uploaded to the server that you are using (create a directory and put it in there if you have to), and then link to that location. For example, log on via FTP to your server, create a directory named images, upload the .ico file into that directory, and then find out the complete link. When you log on via FTP, if you end up at the same place that your index.php (or index.html, wow I really don’t know how blogspot works) is located, then you would place <link rel=”shortcut icon” href=”yourdomain.com/images/samplefavicon.ico”></link> inside of the head of your template. Does that make sense?

    A possibly easier method would be to just link to an external site. Since you can put pretty much any url you want to, you could very easily just upload the .ico file to a photo sharing site (flickr, etc), right-click and copy the link of the photo, and use that as the href value.

    I’m assuming that all of these work, but I’m not completely positive since blogspot seems to already have a favicon for all of the blogs hosted on it. So perhaps they made it such that you’re not allowed to add your own favicon. In which case you’d unfortunately be out of luck. You could always look into getting hosting, of course.

    Let me know if you have any questions, I’d be glad to help if I can.

    Thank you very much, Derek.
    I guess Í’d unfortunately be out of luck indeed.
    I’d already tried out what you’re suggesting after I first read your post on the subject. But I either got ‘no’ favicon (meaning I got the MS-I.E.7 “e” favicon), or I got the big fat orange ‘B’ from blogger.
    And I think they may have made it pretty d**n sure that this shows up, so I was just hoping you might know of some workaround.
    Thanks for the help and the information & take good care! -Jos:)

  • Derek says:

    @Jos
    I’m pretty sure that you can change it actually. I’m not sure how they default your favicon to the blogspot one, but I have seen other blogspot-hosted blogs that have their own favicon. Check out some more in depth instructions at http://how2make.blogspot.com/2007/02/adding-custom-favicon-to-your-blogger.html. It seems to be pretty straightforward to do (I don’t really see why you’d have to use Google pages to host the favicon, but who knows).

    Also note that you can make changes to your template and it could not show up as the favicon for a little while. So you could mistakingly think that it didn’t work, but the reason that it doesn’t work is because it has become cached on either (or both) your local computer and the server. That means that it might not take an effect for a little while (until something refreshes). So make the change and leave it, and perhaps you’ll eventually see it.

  • Jos says:

    Ecellent, Derek! Thanks! I will do that and let you now. Much appreciated! -Jos:)

  • Jos says:

    That worked! Thanks! (now all I got to do is create a more clearly distinctive favicon, I think). Thanks for your help, Derek :)

  • Derek says:

    @Jos
    No problem, glad to be of assistance! I checked out your new favicon, and it’s probably true that you’ll have to go simpler than that. But the good news is that you now know how to change it! And trust me, creating a favicon is no easy task. It’s such a small amount of space to create something interesting and simple!

    In case you’re ready for an animated icon (subtle not flashy), some instructions can be found at http://www.cathetel.com/favicon.htm though the site is mostly about angels.
