Cut Up And Not Loving It

Tagged as: Oct 10

There’s not much more annoying in life than those small things that are seemingly insignificant but turn out to be extremely noticeable. Wonder what the heck I’m talking about?

So I burned myself while eating a few days ago. And now it’s a bit of a cut (or something that feels like a cut) on the tip of my tongue. This can also be called an apical cut of the tongue. And it’s really annoying.

Everytime I move it against my teeth or eat something salty or anything at all, I’m reminded that it’s there. It’s like a little kid who keeps tapping you on the shoulder saying, “Here I am, play with me.” Not that playing with little kids is bad. So maybe it’s more like a little kid tapping you on the shoulder saying, “Here I am, clean up my poo.”

So what solution do I have for this? Nothing. I’ve got nothing. But here are some points that I’ve thought:

  • It’s on the tongue inside of your mouth so that eliminates the usual antiseptic and bandaging for cuts to the skin. Since the mouth is well-known to be full of germs, it is really unfortunate that they’re nothing that can be done about this. Maybe saliva protects it? Maybe not.
  • It’s supposedly the strongest muscle. How do they know this? I have no idea. Whether it is or is not doesn’t matter so much as the fact that it is almost always moving. That makes it hard for the cut to really settled down, kick back, and recover.
  • It’s necessary for eating. We can’t just bypass the tongue by sticking a feeding tube through our nose or veins, can we? Okay I guess that we could. But we won’t because that is just unreasonable.
  • How do people that bite their tongue in their sleep deal with this?!

So you understand that a cut in the mouth must be annoying. But you know that there are a lot of other annoying things out there such as:

  1. Cold sores. Especially if they’re big. Especially if they’re in the crack between your lip and your gum. Especially if you’re at a celebration banquet with lots of good food but which when put inside your mouth actually gets stuck in the cold sore and pokes it, aggravating it even more until you’re at the point of torture. Yeah that’s never happened to me.
  2. Paper cuts. A million of these would be absolutely unbearable torture. One of them is pretty bad, too.
  3. Pinched nerves/muscle knots. Whether you slept wrong, you exercised too much, or anything else that you did, these are so annoying as to make you think about them constantly for the day or two that they last. You almost can’t do anything but complain about it (whether out loud or in your head).

So after all of this, the conclusion is that either I get annoyed very easily or there are a lot of annoying things out in the world.

I tend to burn the roof of my mouth. Generally when taking that first sip of coffee! Ugh.

I have also bit my tongue and the side of my cheek and I know what you mean! However, I think that the mouth tends to heal faster than anywhere else. I mean, your mouth may be full of germs but they are your germs and I think of animals that lick their wound. Google on “saliva + healing” lotta stuff.

However, when you have a wound in your mouth it looms large in your mind. We have a greater sense of our mouth that most places in our body. Check out:

http://jwz.livejournal.com/422384.html which shows a “Sensory Homunculus” which illustrates “what a man’s body would look like if each part grew in proportion to the area of the cortex of the brain concerned with its sensory perception.” The image shows a man with a very large mouth and tongue. Which is why your sore tongue feels so much worse than say, a scrape on the knee.

So, you don’t get annoyed that easily. It’s the fact that your tongue looms large in your perception!

Did I give you “Something to think about”?? I hope so…it’s what I do…harhahrhahaha!

@Ms. Q
It’s true that there seem to be some benefits to having a cut in the mouth (like the fact that it won’t dry out, harden, and such).

That’s an interesting link! Haha the discussion is pretty amusing as well. I’m not sure if that’s what you were referencing when you said “something to think about.” In any case, thanks for the interesting link and picture! How did you find that picture anyways?

I don’t know that you are easily annoyed. A cut on the tongue IS pretty awful. I used to have them all the time when I was a kid with braces. I no longer remember what we did to ease them! Hey, it gave you a post…

I recall seeing some PBS special ages ago (like maybe 20 years) and it featured that sculpture which always intrigued me. I mean, when I think about my tongue, I do “sense” it much better than my say, little toe. For example, when I got my braces, my teeth and mouth seemed HUGE. I couldn’t recall what the sculpture was called so it took a while to search on stuff and I ended up on google images searching on “body map” which led me to that article.

What I was referencing when I wrote “something to think about”? - I was talking about the Sensory Homunculus and how we perceive out body.

Oh that brings back some pretty awful memories of the braces days! There were many many oral cuts back then. You’re right, at least it gave me something to rant about.

@Ms. Q
Haha I guess that I thought worse of what you meant when you gave that link and said that it was “something to think about.” Do you ever miss seeing things like PBS specials since you don’t have a TV at home? Or do you end up watching some at other people’s houses? Perhaps at your mom’s since you also read gossip magazines there…

I seldom think about television or what I’m missing on it. So no, I don’t miss TV. A few of my friends don’t have TVs either and almost all of my friends read. When I do visit anyone, we generally don’t watch TV - the point is to catch up with each other!

My mom watches what she even calls, “mindless fluff” - she finds it soothing. The TV was constantly on when I lived with her so I think I pretty much have my TV viewing done for this lifetime.

Since I haven’t been traveling, I haven’t seen any movies, either (no flights). I could rent DVDs at the library but eh. I figure my movie viewing will go up when I have a boyfriend. Although I’d rather we were doing something other than watching a movie. That’ll give you something to think about ;-)

@Ms. Q
That’s pretty neat that you and your friends don’t have TVs. Well neat to some people and incomprehensible for others.

I think that you’re right that there’s lots of things that are better to do with one’s time than watch some show that you’ll just forget about. Spending time with others is key. There are countless games and activities, not to mention the old stand by: simply talking.

I love missing television because I figure some of it’s got to be great & then when I’m too old to binge drink or drive or hear or see well enough to interact with people all that often without it exhausting me, I’ll be able to catch up on a bunch of Gray’s Anatomys.

@Jill
So you’re missing television with the intent of watching it sometime in the future? That’s interesting. Do you watch much/any television now? What do you do instead?

I don’t watch TV now. I’ve tried, but I only turn it on & then forget to watch. I think I’ve maybe watched ONE entire program at home so far this year. I see it sometimes when I go over to my aunt’s house.

Do instead? I seem to parent intensively and then putter around reading people’s blogs…also any music I can go see, working six days a week, volunteering here & there tends to take up a lot of time & the whole dating thing…ummmm…beer…yeah…I find stuff to fill up the time.

:-) :-) :-)

Wow that’s pretty impressive that you’ve only watched one program at home this year!

Well I didn’t mean to say that there wasn’t anything besides television (because it’s not like it’s the only thing that I do). I was just wondering what other kinds of things you find your time being spent on. And from what you’re saying, it sure does sound busy!

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to? I must say that I definitely have some eclectic tastes myself. Everything from 50s to trance to hip hop and everything else!

I’m really into the folk/Americana/rock/Indie type stuff, blues, world music, religious music. I like the rap/hip hop/electronica stuff too. Trance isn’t ringing a bell for me. I just ordered a CD by The Cat Empire that I think I’m going to *********love************. I don’t know what type of music that is.

That spans a lot of different genres of music! That’s cool, though. Well according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cat_Empire, they’re alternative. I’ve never heard any of their songs so I can’t say for sure. What activities do you do where you listen to music?

I like to listen to music when I’m coding (right now I’m listening to Al Green - The Definitive Greatest Hits), in the car (radio and CD as well), and while doing rather mindless things like washing the dishes. For some reason the music playing while I’m doing things like washing dishes makes the activity much easier to do. Perhaps because it gives you that little sound to move to. :) I prefer music in those instances to television.

I usually put on music the moment I wake up in the morning and keep it on all day best I can…work out first thing, in the car, kid music in the classroom…

My kids & I are heading out right now to hear my cousin’s band play. My son asked an eight year old friend to come along “Do you want to go hear music?”…the friend actually asked, “What kind?” I’m not sure it would even have occurred to my middle schooler to ask!

Tomorrow we head to the radio station to volunteer!!!!!!!!!!! I ******LOVE******* pledge drive!!!! Used to hate it until I started answering phones.

I’m trying out a threaded reply, so hopefully this works! :)
That’s cool that you can have music on so much throughout the day! Yeah I’m not too sure that I would have been very knowledgeable about music when I was around 13 years old either. However, this is also the day and age of stars like Hannah Montana who are not much older themselves!

You like answering phones for the pledge drive? Alright well I guess that I could see how that would be far more pleasant than a place that was doing cold calling! What’s the pledge drive for?

I mean to add that my ex mother in law (who just invited herself to stay at my place for TWO WEEKS - HUH?!?!?!?! I’d be really upset if she ever actually followed through with her cockamamie ideas…) tells me she CAN’T clean with music on! WHAT? I CAN NOT clean without listening to music & in fact, for cleaning it needs to be really loud to drown out the monotony.

I love that the threaded reply that I just did to your comment worked! Sorry to use my replies to you as test ones. Hope you don’t mind! :P
Wow I love it when people invite themselves along to do things, over to your place, or to any other place/function/event that they’re not exactly desired! What is on your playlist for cleaning? For me it’s rather up in the air, depending on what I feel like at the moment. Usually it’s something with more of a beat that I can dance to, though. I haven’t tried listening to music when I’ve cleaned, but I think that I should try that. It might make me want to clean up more!
