Confusing Addresses

Tagged as: , Aug 13

For those that have ever driven in areas that are unfamiliar, I’m sure that you can sympathize with my distaste for confusing addresses.

The thing is, it’s so unnecessary! Why must city planners do things like:

  • Same name but differing suffixes (e.g., Boulevard, Street, and Circle)
  • Same number for multiple prefixes (e.g., 111 North Main St and 111 South Main St)
  • Non-numerical order. This can happen sometimes when changing cities. And it’s no good!
  • Non-standard street behavior. I’m talking about the one way street, the blocking island in the road that restricts cars from entering roads from certain directions, or even a strange break in the road!
  • Buildings where you can’t see the address numbers! Alright so maybe it’s more the fault of the builders of each building. But still, it’s annoying.

I am Derek, therefore I rant. Haha. So will city planners listen? Doubtful, indeed.

Obviously my deal with it is that I don’t like getting lost. Who really does?

This happens by my house; my house is the last house in San Jose before Los Gatos. House numbers go something like this… 5002, 5004, 11000. I’ve had pedestrians come up to me for directions.

“You’re 5004. I’m looking for 11XXX… how far away is that?”
“Uh, next house over.”
“???”

Haha that was probably amusing the first time, not so much the thirtieth, huh?

And, then there is the online map “service!” Have you ever gotten totally lost using Google or Mapquest? I’ve had Google send me twenty minutes out of my way. I hate getting lost too (more importantly, I hate being late because I got lost!).

Oh I can’t stand that! I’ve definitely gotten incorrect directions. It’s too bad because I do fairly rely on them for being correct. And most of the time they are. So some will say that it’s good to always have a map or even a GPS system with you, but I think that someone who is just good with directions will always be just fine. What if the map is wrong? What if your GPS system breaks? Disaster!

Are you good with directions?

This kind of situation arises only when one get changed from place to the other place. But it is really a terrible thing to loose your self. This leads to miss many valuble things also.
