Mementos

In the journey of life, we have our ups and we have our downs. How insightful of me to say, huh? But along the way we each have the chance to collect little mementos that remind us of the stops along the way.

While some people don’t have a care in the world for things that remind them of the past, others like to keep them for those occasional times when they’d like to wax nostalgic. Some like to show them off to everyone, and others enjoy the opportunity to pull out ugly pictures, sappy love notes, and the like in order to have a chuckle or two even if it’s just by themselves.

I bet you can guess which I like to do. Because oh do I do enjoy it.

Anyways whatever the reason, I like to tell people to at least keep a box of the good stuff. Even for those that want to clean up everything, the chance to look back on the path that you’ve traveled is a chance that you don’t want to miss. Trust me, it’s fun.

hope you saved a wheat thin or two in that box with some lisp written on it!

  • Yeah, I think I’ve already mentioned several times that I’m a “tosser” when it comes to anything that isn’t being used at that exact moment. But pictures at least have always been the exception. Well, not always. Once I read this book about organizing & it actually said that you really only need one picture to remind you of someone.

So not true!!!! I can’t believe it advises you to get rid of *pictures*, which are small and take up so little space (Ok, so I have at least a few shelves of them) when you could be tossing out the big souvenirs (my grandmother’s lamp) and keeping the harmless pictures. I can’t believe how many pictures I culled when I read that book and some of those people aren’t even around anymore.

    Hi,
Your blog is great and it has well described the ups and downs of life in a very good manner. What I feel is, One should always be prepared to anything to face and to anything that is going to happen.

I think you’ve written about this topic before but maybe you left a comment on someone else’s blog! I know Jill has left comments about being a “tosser!”

I do save but I also purge. Photos I keep (and it’s so much easier now that I have digital) but sometimes I’ll come across a movie stub or menu or receipt I had kept and I’ll toss it. Depends. The thing is that some things just bring back this flood of memories! I still try to purge things and these days I just try not to save all that much. I was very tempted to throw out the wedding agenda thing for my cousins’ weddings. 3 brothers got married in a year! I thunk and thunk and they have the full names of my relatives and I remember when they were born so I gave in and kept them! It’ll be kinda cool when they have kids too.

I wish I could throw out more but argh, you gotta keep records.
