While I prefer being barefoot to run in sand, for other surfaces I've been wearing Vibram Fivefingers. They are a good compromise; you can still go in stores and stuff, and they give the surface of your feet a little protection from that lone pebble, but they give you nearly all of the muscle and balance benefits of being barefoot. I was surprised when I put them on how much more they felt like being barefoot than they did like shoes. I put up a full Fivefingers review here.

I have run barefoot on a beach before, but never on pavement. That would take some getting used to.

That's really interesting! I've always hated running, but I've been thinking of giving it one more try. Of course, I've been procrastinating for lack of $50 to spend on shoes. I had no idea barefoot running was even an option!
